Chapter 16 Beaten up
The disinfectant's smell lingered in the air. It disturbed my nose, but I knew this was the scent that even the most high-end private hospitals couldn't avoid.
Knowing how rich Mr. William was, I would have thought all their farthest family members would stay at the top private hospital, taken care of by the best medical team in the country. However, I found his wife in a VIP ward of a regular hospital.
I felt puzzled as I entered the room. I carried daily necessities for Miley, and I also bought her favourite fruits, hoping to cheer her up a little.
I was ready to take care of her if the carers were too busy, providing her all the comfort that she deserved. However, entering the room, I felt puzzled. I was ready to find an ill patient who could barely move, but I saw Miley, sitting by the window, happily playing a game on her phone.
Miley looked up and waved at me with a smile.
"Sissy, what brought you here?"
For a moment, I felt bewildered. Miley didn't look like a patient at all. She was gorgeous as usual and looked lively, like always.
"Aren't you sick?" I asked her, couldn't hold myself back from frowning. I texted her a few times, and she didn't reply. I didn't understand, if she was so well, why she didn't communicate with me.
I grabbed her hand playfully.
"Why didn't you answer my messages?" I asked her, disappointed.
"I am sorry. I didn't mean to ignore your messages. My phone broke, and I lost everything, including my account." She told me. Her face showed regret.
A broken phone she could replace easily, and a new SIM card was easy to obtain as well with her husband's connections. Social media accounts could be reactivated in seconds. How could there be no way to contact me? I was astonished by her answer, but I didn't want to ask her directly.
"How did it break?"
Miley tilted her head slightly, pondered, which just made this whole situation more weird to me.
"I went to a bar, got drunk, and dropped it while dancing." She told me this sentence absent-mindedly. Her eyes were hazy, looking somewhat blank, like a child who was still half-asleep.
I was about to frown again when she grabbed my hand suddenly, while she looked deep into my eyes.
"Really, believe me. I got drunk, dropped my phone, lost it, and by the time I realised, I couldn't find it anywhere. Sissy, why would I lie to you?" She added, trying to convince me she was telling the truth.
Her soft and cute demeanour made it hard for anyone to blame her. It made me soften instantly as well. Even if I had so many things to say, I didn't voice my doubts.
"Then why are you in the hospital again? You seem to be fine." I questioned her, hoping I would get an answer that would make sense. But even if I expected an extremely difficult reason, her reaction made me appalled once more.

She chuckled.
"Oh, I just thought I was having too much fun. I thought William wouldn't be back for a while, but he suddenly returned. I was afraid he would be upset with me for having too much fun, so I used being in the hospital as an excuse to avoid his scolding."
It seemed like she was truly whimsical and carefree.
Somewhat, I understood now Mr. William's behaviour when it came to his wife being in the hospital. He must have known about her trick, yet instead of reproaching her, he allowed her to play around.
I felt a mix of envy and doubt. Was there a reason for pretending not to know about his wife's game, allowing her to stay in the hospital? Was there an ulterior motive for letting her play this role? Was it all an act, setting the stage for something between them?
While these questions were on my mind, I unwittingly recalled the scene from my bedroom when he tried to kiss me. How far would he have gone if I didn't stop him? Would he be cheating on his wife using me?
Thinking of that, I felt a sense of guilt as the third party intruded on a relationship.
I forced a smile.
"You and your husband have a great relationship." I commented.
Miley lifted her chin proudly, revealing a faint scab on it. "Of course, he loves me the most."
Her smile was somewhat piercing, somewhat ironic. I couldn't help but think of the cold and dominating man, who was away so many times for so long, leaving his wife alone. The man who tried to kiss me. Could there be others as well? Did he really love her? How could he engage in ambiguous behaviour with her?
Perhaps it was all just a game to him.
Men were like that, especially when they were filthy rich. They thought they could do anything they wished. They often treated women like toys. And even if they had the best toys in the world, they loved to play with inferior ones if the opportunity arose.
I considered this possibility, but I quickly dispelled those thoughts to avoid feeling uncomfortable, avoiding her to see that I felt something wrong. "Why is there a mark on your chin? Are you injured?"
Apparently, Miley hesitated to answer. Her gaze was momentarily strange and sinister before it vanished.
"It is nothing. I met a scumbag at the bar who tried to take advantage of me. I hit him with a beer bottle, and the shards splattered on my face."
Her fierceness left me stunned. While she was brave indeed, she had never resorted to physical violence. I remember her well from school, and she had never been involved in any fight.
"Are you okay?" I asked her with a frown again.
"What could happen to me? But speaking of which..." She glanced at me with a hint of meaning. "I heard you were beaten up at the company. What happened?" She asked.
