Eighty Three
“Astra will be fine,” her father said and they all nodded. Nicholas was not there up to three minutes when the doctor and the nurses came out of the operating room.
“Doctor,” they all said as they moved towards him.
“Both mother and baby are doing fine. The delivery was successful, you have a baby girl,” the doctor said to them and Nicholas took a deep breath of relief.
“Can we see her now?” Nicholas asked the doctor.
“Of course, but let’s not over crowd her,” the doctor said and then left.
“Go on and see her with Brian,” Charise said to her brother in-law.
Nicholas walked into the room to his exwife, now girlfriend with their baby in her arms. The child was red with very little hair on her bed and resting on Astra’s bare chest, her lips were on her nipple, and she was suckling, but it seemed like there was no milk yet.
“Nicholas, you are here,” Astra said, she was surprised to see him. She did not expect to see him not so soon.
“I am here. You did good Astra,” Nicholas said to her, she looked tired and weak, like she had run a race and she finally got to the finish line. But she looked happy though, she looked relieved and joyous as she stared at the little child at her breast. She was seated and holding the baby that had been wrapped in a blanket.
“Do you want to hold her? She looks like you again, it is not really fair, everyone looks like you,” Astra said with a smile. Nicholas looked at the child and Brian was standing at the side looking so confused. He contemplated carrying the child but he had fears very valid ones but they were fears. He was scared that he would drop the child or that he would not hold on to her well.
“Don’t be scared Nicholas, you will be fine,” Astra told him and he schooled himself and slowly extracted the baby from her hands. Nicholas stared at the pink perfect child, at her eyelids that were closed, the beautiful nose, the lips and the ears. Nicholas guessed she did look like him like Brian. Like Brianna. Nicholas felt emotion overtake him as he held the child, the love that he felt for his blood almost shook him. It was so new and unreal and it so beautiful. Nicholas felt tears stain his eyes. He loved the child.
“She looks so perfect. Did we make this whole human being? She looks like Brianna,” Nicholas said. Astra thought that he looked very handsome right then, holding his child and almost crying, she loved the man.
“We made her Nicholas and she does look like Brianna,” Astra agreed.
“Maybe we should name her that, Brianna,” Nicholas said and Astra smiled. She was not so sure about that.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
“Like Brian? We would be twins,” Brian said putting himself in the conversation. Her son’s enthusiasm about the name made her consider it.
“As a middle name maybe, not a first name. Brianna, would always be Brianna,” Astra said and Nicholas nodded. The baby started to fuss in his arms and Nicholas looked scared for a moment before he gained himself and gently dropped the baby in her arms.
“We have time to think of a name,” Nicholas said.
“We have a whole list of names at home, we can decide,” Astra agreed with him and settled with the child.
“Can I hold the baby now?” Brian asked.
“Maybe not just yet,” Astra said with a smile. Brian seemed fearless unlike Nicholas that had been so skeptical. i
“Your parents and your sister are waiting for you outside. I will tell them to come in now,” Nicholas said and Astra nodded.
“Before the crowd comes in, I want to let you know that I love you, I always have, I always will and thank you for bringing my children into this world,” Nicholas said to Astra and he kissed her lips.
“I love you too Nicholas, I truly do. Thank you so much for helping me make the babies, they won’t be here without you,” Astra replied and she pressed her lips to his.
“Congratulations Astra,” her sister said as she entered into the room. Her mother and father were not far behind. Astra smiled as her family came in. She was happy that her sister was there for her, that she was willing to be there for her. Astra was grateful that she was able to fix things with her family.
“She looks very beautiful, she looks more like Nicholas though, maybe she might grow to look like you,” Charise said as she studied the baby.
“Would you like to hold her?” Astra asked looking at her sister. She was looking at the baby in awe.
“Oh of course. It has really been so long since I saw a new born baby, it never does get old,” Charise said and Astra stretched the baby to her carefully. Her sister extracted the child from her hands and held on the baby. She looked like she was in love.
“Maybe I will have another child after all,” Charise said softly.
“She does look so precious. You did very well Astra,” her mother said to her. Things were not so rosy after everything that happened between them. Astra’s mother still kept a distance from her. Astra understood it but she did not like it all, it was not easy though to just fall into normal. It was hard to just forget everything.
“Thank you mother,” Astra said to her, and her mother hugged her, Astra could see tears in her eyes.
Astra barely even noticed that Nicholas had left the room so that they could have some time together.
“Another grandchild to the brood,” her father said with a laugh and Astra laughed with him. Her mother looked so very moody though, Astra wondered what was wrong.
“What is the problem mother?” Astra asked her mother.
“I was not a very good mother Astra. I was not a good mother to you. The more I think about it I blame myself for all that you had to face. I favored one child over the other, and when I knew that I was doing, when I git to understand, you were old enough to know what I was doing. It was like a habit then that I could not stop, I took out too much on my Astra, and I am really sorry. I am sorry for my shortcomings as a mother and I am grateful that even with my shortcomings you still turned out to be a very good person and a mother too,” her mother said, tears were going down her eyes. Astra felt pain at her mother’s words. The truth was that was a little bitter, the pains of her childhood still affected her. To think that her mother still felt bad too after all these while made her know that she was still loved.
“You do not have the cry mother. You do not have to be so sorry. It is alright, everything is okay, I am fine now mother,” Astra said to her mother and drew her into a hug. There was something about the birth of a child that drew mother and daughter closer.
Astra held on to her mother before she finally let go.
“You are right, the past in is the past, let us look forward to the future,” her mother said and wiped her eyes.
“So what are you naming the latest addition?” Her mother asked. Her father had come closer and was now holding her baby.
“We have not decided a first name yet, but her middle name will be Brianna, for the child that we lost,” Astra said. She had a sad moment as she remembered Brianna.
“That will be very nice,” Charise said. Her eyes were misty too.
“So when are you marrying Nicholas again?” Her father asked, in an obvious bid to lighten the sour mood.
Astra, laughed together with her mother and Charise.
“I only just had a child father,” Astra replied her father.
“Well you don’t have to if you do not want to. I have a feeling though, that you do want to marry him,” her father said and Astra nodded with a smile.
“I am waiting for him to ask,” Astra said and both her mother and sister donned twin smiles.
“Well if he wastes too much time you should ask him yourself. It is the twenty-first century,” Charise said and Astra smiled.
