Chapter 29 Betrothed bride
When Blaine arrived at his family’s house he did everything within his power not to look phased by how different things seemed or how happy he used to be that he would never have reason to go back to this place. Yet, here he is, right where he started.
He got down from the car and was about to shut the door when he heard Mavis asking a question.
” Should I stay inside?” She asked but she didn’t look at him.
” No, come with me.” He said with a small smile but that didn’t do anything to stop her from looking upset. Well, he did threaten to end her some moments ago.
Mavis got down from the car and reluctantly took his hand and followed him inside the mansion that he drove them into. When he mentioned that his father was a Mafia, she didn’t exactly picture that their family house would be a mansion. She pictured a weary-looking lair but this place was beautiful, especially the pool.
What she noticed however was that the place didn’t have men standing around as bodyguards. It looked like no one lived there at all. She wanted to ask but remembered how cold Blaine was to her earlier. She decided against it since she will soon see her siblings and her friends. They must’ve gotten some information too.
When they got to the door, Blaine looked a little confused. There was no door knob and it didn’t seem like there was anywhere to make his presence known. Knocking would never get anyone’s attention. As he stood there, he let go of her hands and stood directly in front of the door and then a red dot scanned him from head to toe still the door didn’t open.
He was about to take out his phone to call Paulo since Paulo had already gotten here with Mavis’s siblings and friends. It was then the door opened and he entered with Mavis’s hand in his.
Mavis marveled at the house. It looked completely white just like she always dreamed her father’s Estate would be by the time she finishes the renovation. Now she doesn’t even think that is possible. Everything about the house was white, the curtains, the couches, the small rug in the sitting room, even the vase! And as for the paints or what were supposed to be paintings, they were just hung up on the wall with no paintings at all.
” What’s with the lack of colors,” she asked unable to pretend that this wasn’t weird. Even though she liked white, she’d have at least thrown in a bit of blue or some other calm color to make things look more beautiful.
” Papa thinks this is his own heaven” Blaine said before he let go of her hand and took a closer look at his father’s house.
As he was there, a redhead woman came down the stairs in a hurry and when she saw him, she screamed and ran towards him before she threw herself at him. Instinctively Blaine held onto her so she wouldn’t fall to the floor. He wondered who she was because of the way she greeted him fondly but before he could ask, she kissed him right there in front of Mavis and said, ” te extrañé” which meant I missed you but Mavis didn’t know that.
” What?” Blaine asked and then he heard that all too familiar laughter and dropped the woman carefully on the floor so she would stand on her own.
” Padré” Blaine said and that one Mavis understood. He meant father but the chill in Blaine’s voice was one that made Mavis think that he was a little bit afraid of this tall, huge man standing before him with just a tiny patch of grey hair on his black hair and obsidian eyes. If Blaine didn’t say he was adopted, I wouldn’t believe that this man was not his biological father. They looked so alike.
” Miguel, how are you?” He said in English the moment he saw Mavis. Unlike what she imagined, he seemed bright especially when he smiled. If she was told that he was a Mafia gang leader she would’ve never believed it.
” I’m fine?” Blaine said, feeling confused that his father was addressing him in English.
” Who is this?” He asked in Spanish, referring to the redhead currently clinging to him.
” Oh, that’s your wife. El Mariano’s daughter, remember?” His father said smiling brightly at Blaine who looked speechless. This was one of the few moments if not the first time that Mavis was seeing him this shocked.
” Isabella?” Blaine asked looking at the girl again. Sure she was beautiful but he was very certain that she was no more than eighteen years old and even though that makes her technically legal it doesn’t make it okay.
” Padré, the last time I saw her she was ten! I’m not going to marry her. She’s just a kid!”
” Twelve,” the girl said looking at him with eyes that said she was hurt.
” What?”
” I was twelve when we last saw and now I’m twenty” she explained further but that just made him stare at her even more.
” Shit… is this why you brought me here? You exposed my location to Paulo so he could fish me out and then you made him threaten me just so I’ll come to Columbia and marry a kid?!”
” I’m not a kid” the girl muttered but he just glared at her.
” You act like one! Why would you be so foolish to agree to this?” He barked at her and she whimpered.
” Well, she is your betrothed. I made this deal with Mariano when she was born. We have to strengthen our hold on the area, there’s a new mafia that has arisen and he can’t be defeated unless we join forces. Hence the need to marry her.” His father said but the spoke, the more he got so irritated by his father. First, he had been communicating with his father and the girl in Spanish but his father was purposely speaking in English. It meant only one thing – he knows about Mavis. He knows how he feels about Mavis and wants to use this to his advantage. That is very dangerous, Blaine thought.Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
” I am not marrying her” Blaine responded in English as well.
” Well if you don’t then be prepared for my empire to fall and you will fall with it.”
” You’re unbelievable,” Blaine said and then he turned to look at Mavis but found Mavis holding back tears.
” What is it?” He asked and then he followed the direction that her eyes were fixed but saw nothing. He didn’t know that Mavis was currently blaming herself for ever meeting Blaine, she was telling herself that life would’ve been so much better if she never slept with him that night and that truth she had come to realize was the only reason she was near tears.
“You have two options, Miguel. Stay here and just marry the girl. You aren’t even required to get your hands in any dirty business like before. I’m basically giving you a perfect life here and as for your… woman over there, she will be taken care of. You can keep fucking her, no one cares, Isabella is willing to share aren’t you Isabella?”
” Why don’t you stop boring me with your unenticing offer and skip to the other option that I will still end up choosing no matter how bad you make it look,” Blaine said and watched as his father’s face darkened in an instant at his defiance.
” The other option is that you can leave here with your mistress but this time more of your friends will die Young girl, are you ready for that?” The man said, looking at Mavis for a response but she didn’t understand why he would say that so she just looked at him in confusion before she looked at Blaine again.
” Wow. She is a beauty but she seems a bit dumb maybe?”
” I’m not dumb!” Mavis responded, unable to stand this man after calling her two things she hated to hear – a mistress and saying she is dumb.
” Oh. Sorry” he said laughing a bit before he sat on the couch and exhaled as if he was just resting after a long day.
” What does he mean by more of my friends will die?” Mavis asked looking at Blaine in the eye even if he wouldn’t look back at her. This was a very important thing to her and no matter what he had said to make her scared of him she refused to take that into account at that moment because it was very clear that something bad has happened to her siblings or her friends!
” What does he mean Blaine?!” She yelled.
” Blaine? Ridiculous.” She heard his father mutter spitefully.
” Your. Friend. Dead” the redhead girl said, looking at Mavis with a heartless smirk.
” I wasn’t talking to you. Who the hell are you?”
” Mavis, please calm down”
” No! Tell me who died” she yelled so hard that Blaine could see the veins in her throat popping. He really didn’t want to tell her like this, he wanted to tell her in a way that it wouldn’t shock her too much but who doesn’t get thrown by news of your loved one’s death? Maybe he should just say it either way.
” Darla,” he said and watched as tears dropped from her eyes and she started to gasp for air as if she was asthmatic.
” Mavis, calm down please,” he said but she just fainted.
