MISTAKE 50
Chapter 50: Investigating
“The book? Isn’t his company cooperating with her? How is thus odd?”
“He started making payments a year and a half ago. The first payment being the largest,” Neil elaborated.
“So, the book Autumn’s Snow might be commissioned by him?” Daniel said with a slight
frown.
“If that is true, this man is much more complicated in thought than that,” Neil said in
amusement.
“He commissioned a book with characters inspired by my wife?” Daniel asked.
“That is very suspicious. I check up on their history. Your wife and that man definitely knew each other at the university.
But from what I hear, they were acquaintances, at most slightly friendly. It is odd for him to do this. People do think that your wife’s art is the inspiration for some scenes, but the author
has not commented on this.”
“She has; Stanley Forest told me this himself,” Daniel said, and Neil raised a brow, taking a sip of his cola on the screen.
Daniel was having a headache. He had only had a bad feeling about Stanley and was slightly jealous of how close he was to Anya and wanted to know who he was.
He admits he barely trusts anyone and did not trust anyone near his Anya, especially in a business where things are put in black and white. He wanted to protect her from the shadows, not that she could not stand him.
But why does everything look messy? He felt as though he had walked into a well–curated plot. He did not like being tested. His mood was somber; a hint of danger leaked from him,
suffocating the room.
“If she has said this to him, it means she must have said it to others in private. If these words. were passed around, it would explain why people suddenly feel Anya’s work bears resemblance to art in the book,” Daniel said.
“You have a point; after all, how do you write words to describe art and people will immediately resonate with the one in your head? Sounds too fake to me.”
“And if that book was commissioned, doesn’t that mean that these ideas were planted too? Why are they trying to connect that book to your wife?” Neil asked.
He saw Daniel massage his temple and sighed, the weight of the information like a heavy cloud holding rain. He had researched Anya Jones and knew that they were divorced.
But Daniel retains that she is his wife, making him feel that something had happened between them. He has been friends with Daniel since university, so he definitely knew that they were in a contract relationship.
He did not understand what happened in between to cause them to become this way.
“I should add that author, Autumn Hanson, into our search. Don’t worry, I will find out as much as possible. It is best to do it before your wife signs anything with them. You should get her a good lawyer while I try to get my hands on the document they are drafting for her,” Neil suggested. The
moment these words were said, Daniel felt his head buzz. Daniel felt a rush of irritation. His mood dipped even further.
“Hanson? That is quite a common name. Does she have any connection to Jonathan Hanson?” he asked.

“I will have to check that,” Neil said. “Who is that?”
“Anya’s lawyer. He runs his own firm, and they live lawyers there that handle more than divorce. All of Anya’s legal matters are handled by him,” Daniel said, and Neil paused mid–sip.
“Should she have a connection?” Neil asks solemnly.
“If possible,”
“I see. Let me get some information and I will get back to you,” he said, then paused. “I got you an invitation to an auction holding tomorrow,” Neil said.
“I don’t have the time; I have an auction to attend.” Daniel dismissed.
“Different from the auction I am trying to get you to?” he asked, and Daniel paused.
“You are trying to send me to an auction?” Daniel asked.
“It’s a gift from me. There is a painting called Anya in the Wind being auctioned there. Your wife has been looking for it for a long time. I don’t know why, but she has gone through crazy lengths for information on it,” Neil explained, and Daniel fell silent for a few seconds.
“Thank you,” he said to Neil before ending the call. He looked at his messages and saw the e- invite and got up. It was a black–tie event. Anya would be there. It made him worry about what to wear for
the first time in his life. As he was going through his luggage, his phone rang. It
was his mother.
“I am not sure how I raised such a useless son. You went to see Anya only once since you found her? Are you not the one who was crying for her the other day?” His mother’s voice attempted to tear through his eardrums.
“Hello, mother, “he greeted, but she just kept going.
“It is fine,” she quickly turned to self–blame. ” Is me. I am the one that is useless. I am the one who could not even raise a responsible man.
“That you know I have not gone except for once; James must have called you.”
“Why won’t he be anxious? He paved the way and took you to see her, and you only stopped by once. I heard the first time was brutal, so you were probably discouraged. How can you be discouraged after one meeting? Where is your spine? Did it go missing in the womb?” she continued to lament.
“I will see her soon, mother. Something came up.” he answered.
“How can something come up? Did you forget why you went to find Anya?” his mother scolded.
*Hand over the phone,” Daniel heard a voice say. It seemed to be Rodney.
“Daniel?” The elder’s voice entered his ears.
“Grandpa,” he answered.
“Where are you?” he asked.
“Lincoln City,”
“Is Anya in that city? You went there to see her?” he asked.
“Yes, I did,” Daniel answered.
“Why? Do you regret it?” Rodney asked.
“Yes,” Daniel answered.
“A man must be responsible for his actions at all times. If you are going to make a decision stick to it. What do you mean by going back? And if you had decided to go, what do you mean by giving up halfway?” Rodney lectured.
“I wanted to apologize, but…” he started to say.
“But?”
“Anya is mine, and it seems I am not the only one who thinks so,” Daniel answered, his voice lowering dangerously.
“What does that mean?” Rodney asked.
“Some people have plotted an elaborate scheme around Anya. If I was paying attention, I would have caught it from the beginning,” he said.
“Explain.”
“A book seemed to have been commissioned with Anya as the muse; they have roped her to a contract about to be signed; even the lawyer Anya intends to use while managing this contract seems to have been compromised. The more I am looking into it, the worse it is getting,” he explained. The other end went silent for a while, then finally spoke, his voice lowering dangerously.
