MISTAKE 150
Chapter 150: Finding her mother
Anya felt a lump form in her throat. Her relationship with Wendy had been just like she had thought she would with her own mother.
“Thank you, Wendy,” Anya replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Wendy reached into her clutch, withdrawing a small velvet box. “I have something for you,” she said, opening the box to reveal a delicate gold bracelet adorned with intricate filigree work and tiny pearls. “This has been in our family for generations. My mother gave it to me on my wedding day, and now I want you to have it.”
Anya’s eyes widened; she felt overwhelmed. “Wendy, I… I don’t know what to say.”
The older woman’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as she fastened the bracelet around Anya’s wrist. “You don’t have to say anything, my dear. You’ve brought such joy into Daniel’s life, into all our lives. This is my way of welcoming you into the family, truly and completely. Besides, if you react this way, how will you react to the properties Ray and Michael have prepared for you?”
“They really won’t go overboard, will they?” Anya asked.
“How is that considered overboard? That is merely a greeting gift. According to tradition, Daniel needs to give you something of greater value. He didn’t tell you?” Wendy asked.
“No,” Anya answered. The overwhelming feeling increased.
Marriage saw this and chuckled. “Don’t worry too much. You don’t want to stress the baby.”
Taking in deep breaths, Anya embraced Wendy, careful not to wrinkle either of their dresses.” Thank you,” she whispered. “For everything.”

Wendy pulled back, cupping Anya’s face in her hands. “You’re going to make a beautiful bride and an even more formidable addition to our family. Now, let’s get you married, shall we?”
As Wendy left to take her seat, Anya turned back to the mirror, taking in her reflection. The vintage bracelet glimmered on her wrist. She suddenly felt a bit of calm wash over her.
Before she knew it, Anya found herself at the entrance to the church, her arm linked with her father’s. The imposing doors loomed before them, muffling the sound of the music inside.
“Ready?” those at the door asked, and she took a deep breath and nodded.
Anya nodded, unable to trust her voice. As the doors swung open, the music Anya and Daniel picked filled the air.
She took a deep breath and stepped forward, her eyes immediately seeking out Daniel at the
altar.
The door opened, and Henry walked, fist throwing flowers along the way. She looked cute in her pink dress.
The bride’s maids and maid of honor entered next, looking all beautiful in purple.
The music began, and all stood for the bride’s entrance. When Anya entered, Daniel looked as though his soul had been stolen. His Anya looked like an angel had dropped from the sky.
He felt his heart itch as she walked closer to him. He could not describe how surreal this
moment was.
It felt like forever when she finally got ready for him and he took her hand. Rings were exchanged with vows.

As vows were said, Daniel and Anya felt like this was an oath they had taken before.
To love, to cherish, Till Death Do Us Part.
“You may kiss the bride,” the priest announced, a smile wrinkling the corners of his eyes.
Daniel cupped Anya’s face in his hands, his touch soft and gentle.
For a moment, the world fell away, leaving just the two of them. Then he leaned in, capturing her lips in a kiss that was both tender and passionate, a promise of the life they would build together.
Finally, he had her.
The celebration came and went. One afternoon, Jerry walked into their home to inform Daniel that they had found Anya’s mother, Stella.
Daniel looked to Anya, who had overheard them on the stairs.
“Where?” Anya asked. Her voice was shaking.
“We received information from a partner hospital about a coma patient. It is her. They say the patient was brought in at night three days ago. She had been found by the police,” Jerry explained.
“Let’s go,” Anya said, hurriedly dressed.
They arrived at the hospital in a rush. Anya rushed over to see her mother, while Daniel handled the transfer. When Anya saw her mother alive and well, she broke into sobs. She cried

so hard, but her mother remained still.
She was so glad to see her alive. Since her mother had died, Anya had been having the same dream. Like everyone who loses a loved one, she dreamt that she would wake up one day and the person she thought was dead as still alive.
By the time she returned to her side, the doctors were preparing to move Stella.
This was the first time Matthew had seen Stella. The moment he saw her, he froze. Anya did
not notice his reaction as she hurried towards him.
“What are they doing?” she asked as the doctors started moving the patient. Her mother was hooked up to a weird machine.
“It is best she is treated at our family hospital,” he said to her, and she thought his words
made sense.
“What about her previous doctors?” She asked, “What is with the machine?”
“We can always consult with them later,” he said as he leaned in. “You should already know we want to do more than treat her.”
His words made her pause. True. Daniel suspected her mother was a Grey. Stella was transferred via a helicopter to the Shaw family clinic. They followed while Daniel chatted with a specialist on the phone, making her severely uncomfortable.
She could see his frowning face, which was much different from his usual blank face, and this bothered her. When they arrived at the hospital, he remained frowning till they entered the hospital.
Anya noticed that her mother’s transfer was done secretly, and this bothered her. She wanted to ask what was going on, but Daniel was on the phone till a man named Ronald showed up

dressed in a long navy blue coat.
The moment the doctors were done and Ronald stepped in and saw Stella on the bed, he froze and looked sharply at Daniel.
Anya caught his reaction.
“What is going on?” She could no longer hold it in and asked. Daniel ended his call quickly when he heard her voice. He was busy giving orders to make sure only the most trusted people worked on Stella. The most trusted, not only in skill but secrecy.
“Do you really think my mother is not waking up?” Anya asked, and Ronald glanced at Daniel while wearing the same dark look on his face. Their reactions were scaring her.
“Answer me!” Anya was getting agitated.
“I am not sure she will wake up, as it is tricky. How did they manage to put this machine on her?” Ronald asked as he walked closer. He shot Daniel another dark look.
“Government issued?” Daniel asked as he pretended not to see the look in his eyes.
Ronald placed his hand over Stella’s head on the metal wrapping around her skull and frowned.
“She is not in a coma; she is trapped in a dream. Someone placed her in there to access her memory. We need to get her out. It is harder to get out without knowing how long she has been under,” he said, and Anya felt confused. A machine to access her memory?
“Are you saying someone did this to her?” Anya asked.

“This is a machine I have seen in government labs. This seems to be something bought off the black market. It could be more unstable,” Daniel said.
Why would anyone do this? To access her memory? What did her mother know that would cause people to fake her death and use this unstable technology on her?
What were they trying to find? Or better yet, who?
