The Apple of My Eye

Chapter 2043 Who Was It

Chapter 2043 Who Was It

David had gotten a glimpse of the man's left side. Although it was dark, the man had looked pretty

good, and he wasn't as grotesque as Charles had described him to be.

When David turned his head, he caught Charles staring at him. His red eyes, burning with ferocity,

made fear bubble up in the pit of David's stomach. He broke into a cold sweat and did not dare to utter

a word, in case, it revved up Charles' anger. Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.

Charles was back at the Dream Garden. When he entered his house, he was surprised to see that

Melissa was still awake.

"Mom, what are you doing? Why haven't you slept yet?" Charles was worried that Melissa had fallen

sick again.

"You're back! What took you so long to come?" Melissa asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Ah, I've been very busy, and my schedule is packed. It's already late. You should go to bed. I'll see you

tomorrow." Charles let out a loud sigh. Charles was completely knackered and knew that his face bore

every sign of it. He wanted to go to his room without falling prey to Melissa's suspicion.

"What have you been hiding from me all these days, Charles?" Melissa was worried. She felt the need

to confront him and have all her questions answered.

She didn't want Charles to get away with what he had been doing. That was why she had stayed

awake–to look him in the eye and get an answer. He had been eschewing her efforts to make a

conversation with him. Whether it had been intentional or unintentional, she didn't know. But she knew

one thing for sure–she'd find the answers.

Melissa's heart ached when she realized that the relationship with her son had turned bitter.

"What? What are you talking about, Mom?" Charles said expressionless, trying to conceal his

nervousness.

"I'm asking you for the last time. Are you really going to marry Vicky?" Melissa locked her intense gaze

on Charles.

"Oh, for God's sake, stop being unreasonable. If you're going to go on and on about this, I might have

to run away from you," Charles growled in anger.

Melissa shuddered at the loudness of his voice and his menacing tone. She didn't expect him to react

this way. She couldn't gather herself to say a word.

"It's already late, you should go to bed."

Charles stormed off to his study.

He waited at the door for a minute, thinking that Melissa might follow him and dart questions at him.

When there wasn't a trace of her, he sighed in relief.

Charles went to his desk and let his eyes wander over the pictures of Sheryl. Their wonderful time

together, her beautiful face, her smile that made her eyes twinkle, and her sweet voice came flooding

back from his memories in an instant. His heart was heavy as he swallowed the lump that formed in his

throat. It wasn't such a long time ago when he had held her in his arms. Now, she was far away from

him, out of his reach.

His eyes prickled. What would he do without her? She had gone, taking away all his happiness along

with her. His head was whirling with thoughts of Sheryl when he picked up the phone and called David.

He ordered him to find out who the man was, as soon as possible. David couldn't help but notice the

tremor in his voice.

David hadn't seen Charles sound weak before. The strong man, who usually sounded powerful, was

trembling like a little child. After all, he might lose the love of his life.

The next day

Sheryl was driving her kids to school. She had a strong feeling that she was being followed. But she

couldn't see anyone in the traffic.

"Mommy, you're a naughty girl! You didn't drive with care. If Daddy finds out, he'll punish you." Shirley

was giggling in amusement.

Shirley's comment and her happy face made Sheryl forget everything, and it brought a sense of relief.

She didn't bother any further to find out if someone was stalking her or not.

"Mommy is not a naughty girl, Shirley. You know that Mommy is extremely careful when she drives,"

Sheryl said with a big grin.

Watching his mother and sister argue so happily annoyed Clark even more. He ignored them and

looked out of the window with a straight face.

Sheryl couldn't help but be reminded of Charles when she saw her son's straight face.

When they arrived at the gate of the school, Clark was completely zoned out. Sheryl was worried.

"What's up Clark, is everything okay?" Sheryl studied his face with knitted eyebrows.

"I'm fine, Mommy," Clark answered. He didn't want to tell her what had been bothering him.

Clark was aware that his parents had gotten a divorce and that they wouldn't be a happy family

anymore. But he'd never let Shirley find that out. He knew that it would break her heart, and she would

stop being the happy, chirpy girl she had always been.

Although Clark hadn't cried in front of his mother or said a word, he hadn't stopped worrying about his

parents' separation. He prayed every single day for them to get back together, "Are you really okay?"

Sheryl knew that something was bothering her son and that he wasn't telling her what it was.

When Clark wrinkled his eyebrows, it only meant one thing: something was troubling him. The boy

hadn't said a word despite that. It didn't seem good at all.

"Do you remember what Mommy has told you, Clark?"

"You have told me a lot of things. Which one do you mean?" Clark retorted.

Sheryl was annoyed by Clark's response.

The two of them stared at each other, their faces burning in anger. Shirley chuckled as she looked at

them.

"The two of you have the same expression on your face. Too bad! Didn't you tell me that you won't get

mad at each other?" Shirley's innocent words broke the tension. Sheryl and Clark burst out laughing.

"Okay, I promise you that Mommy will never get mad at your brother." Shirley smiled.

"I promise you, too," Clark chimed in.

Sheryl couldn't stop smiling at her son's chivalry. She felt that he'd grow up to be a handsome,

chivalrous man, with a lot of admirers.

She shook her head and laughed at the thought of it as she watched her children step out of the car.

When Sheryl arrived at the Cloud Advertising Company, she sensed that something was different. Her

usual busy colleagues were staring at her with playful smiles on their faces.

"What's going on?" Sheryl asked Phoebe.

"Looks like your romantic life has reached a new milestone, Ms.Xia." Phoebe chuckled.

Sheryl became irritated, and she felt that something was wrong.

She immediately walked inside her office without saying a word. She was right. The table was loaded

with gifts and a bouquet of red roses.

She didn't have to guess who had sent them; she knew that they were from Damian. "Take the flowers

and clear the table. Do not put all this crap to my office. Do you understand?" Sheryl ordered her

secretary.

"Yes, Ms. Xia." Sheryl's secretary was taken aback by her tone. She didn't know what had upset her.

She cleared the table and walked out without saying a word.

Isla was interrupted by Phoebe as soon as she walked in to the office.

The two of them got immersed in an intense conversation about Sheryl and the bouquet of red roses.

Once they were done talking, Isla sneaked into Sheryl's office like a stealthy cat.

Although Isla hadn't said a word, Sheryl could see Isla's curious eyes peering at her.

"Didn't you tell me that you were busy this morning?"

"Oh, I can't miss seeing you, no matter how busy I am. You'll have no time for me when you start dating

that man. I'll only get to gawp at you in envy." Isla winked at Sheryl.

"How dare you? You'll be doomed if you don't submit the project today." Sheryl's voice was loud and

menacing.

"You know what you are? You're a fucking leech that sticks on people for money. Do you think I'm your

slave?" Isla spat, her face burning with rage, and her arms akimbo.

"Yeah, right! Let's see what you're going to do about me." Sheryl shrugged nonchalantly.

"When did you learn to speak like that to me, Sheryl? Your wings have become stronger, haven't they?

You cannot speak to me like this. Do you get it?" Isla looked like she would get into a fist fight with

Sheryl.

Sheryl's face carried no expression. She was serene and remained unaffected by Isla's demeanor.

When their eyes met for a second, Isla's jaw dropped as if she had remembered something. "Who is it?

Who has sent you the flowers?" Isla said, suddenly pointing at the flowers.
