Chapter 51 You Should Care Less About It
Jocelyn couldn't figure out what was going on. She chose to leave, though, in case she pissed him off and got kicked out of the house.
Then, all of a sudden, she remembered that she and Todd had made plans yesterday to meet this morning. She checked the quartz clock on the wall, which showed it was already 2:00 p.m.
"Oh my goodness! I slept for so long! Now that I stood him up again, he must think I'm making excuses!" Jocelyn thought to herself.
Jocelyn decided to get up and meet Todd because she was feeling better.
Calvin looked up when he heard her move. He asked, "Where are you going?" when he saw that she was getting out of bed.
Jocelyn cast a glance toward the door. Because she was afraid to admit she was planning to meet another man, she made an excuse and said, "I'm going to the bathroom."
Calvin asked suspiciously, "Can you do that by yourself?"
"How come I can't do it on my own? Why do I need someone to help me pee?" Jocelyn said as she walked toward the door.
She no longer had a fever but was still feeling under the weather. She was so frail that she had to cling to the walls for support as she walked.
She'd only taken a few steps when she felt like she was floating. Calvin carried her to the bathroom and set her down on the toilet before she had a chance to react.
Jocelyn didn't regain consciousness until he left the bathroom.
She realized he treated her like a frail patient.
She was unable to decipher his thoughts. Having been ignoring her and acting like he didn't see her the whole morning, he was suddenly pleasant to be around.
His erratic behavior puzzled her.
Jocelyn washed her face after using the restroom and then applied light makeup to make herself look refreshed. She then prepared to leave the house after she got dressed.
As soon as she stepped out of the bathroom, she was surprised to see Calvin waiting outside.
After seeing how well she was dressed, he asked, "Where are you going now?"
"I have to go out," Jocelyn said as she felt obligated to inform him of her schedule.
"What are you going to do?" Calvin asked while sizing her up.
Even though her fever was nearly gone, he worried she was still too weak to go out.
"I've already wasted the morning taking care of you. But why do you want to go out as soon as you feel a little better?" he thought to himself.
"I have to go see a friend," Jocelyn replied.
"Is your friend a dude or a woman?"
His detailed question caught Jocelyn off guard.
Jocelyn was worried because they had agreed not to meddle too much in each other's lives.
"A guy."
Jocelyn knew Calvin would be upset if she revealed she was meeting Todd, so she didn't have the guts to tell him.
Calvin frowned and turned to face her when she said she was going out to meet a man.
She looked lovely in her beige gown and bare makeup. She was as delicate as a Victorian lady, and he had an overwhelming need to be by her side and protect her.
He hadn't expected her to get all dressed up for a date with a man.
He thought to himself, "Have you forgotten what your last name is now?"
Calvin was jealous, but he pretended it didn't bother him. He said thoughtfully, "Your fever has gone down, but you're not over your cold yet. You should stay at home and have some rest." Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
"I'm all right now. I'm completely recovered."
Jocelyn subconsciously glanced at the clock on the wall because she needed to leave the house immediately.
Calvin could tell she just wanted to get rid of him and leave the house. He walked over to her, closed his laptop, and shoved it into her arms.
"Hold it!"
"What? Ah!"
She was caught off guard when he abruptly shoved the heavy laptop into her arms, so she fell to the ground with it instead of holding it.
Calvin reacted swiftly, catching the laptop a split second before it landed on the ground. He grabbed her collar and lifted her at the same time.
"Is it true that you feel fine?" Calvin regarded her with disdain and pushed her toward the room.
"Go back to your room and lie down! You're not going anywhere until you feel better!"
Jocelyn was speechless. She thought to herself, "Calvin, you bastard. Don't you think you should care less about my personal life?"
Because Calvin pushed her into the room, Jocelyn was forced to return inside and lie down.
She figured that since she couldn't meet Todd, she should at least send him a message to reschedule their date. Unfortunately, Calvin snatched her phone as soon as she held it.
"Hey! What are you doing?"
He handed her a thermometer before she could finish her sentence.
Calvin had a serious expression, and his movements were a little rude. He accidentally poked her arm with the thermometer because he wasn't paying attention.
Jocelyn, however, was somewhat surprised that she felt he genuinely cared about her.
Something from her childhood returned to her. Her mother would take her temperature with a thermometer whenever she was ill, just as Calvin had done for her.
She suspected that Calvin was concerned for her well-being.
Jocelyn had no idea what Calvin was thinking or why he was so nice to her all of a sudden.
She thought to herself, "Didn't you swear that you'd never fall in love with me?"
"Mr. Austin, are you being so nice to me because I'm sick, or is it something else?" Jocelyn asked. She was desperate to know the answer because she was curious about Calvin's feelings for her.
"You are overthinking. I'm only here because my mother made me!" Calvin interrupted her with a blank expression.
He remembered the bet they made, so he refused to admit the real reason why he took care of her.
He didn't want to lose the bet from the bottom of his heart because the last thing he hoped was to let Jocelyn be the one to win.
"Oh, I see." Jocelyn realized she had been overthinking the situation after learning that he cared for her because of Beatrice. She admitted that she had thought too highly of herself earlier.
Also, she knew that Calvin would kick her out of the house once she recovered.
Jocelyn then began to consider where she should settle next. She asked, "By the way, Mr. Austin, you said you would find me an apartment in the city. How's that going? Where is the apartment?"
"When did I ever say anything about finding you an apartment?" Calvin asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Huh? Have you forgotten about that, or did I remember it wrong?" Jocelyn thought to herself.
Suspecting that he had forgotten about it, Jocelyn reminded him, "You said it yourself here last night. Did you forget about this?"
"I don't remember saying that. Why do you keep bringing this up?"
Calvin had no plans to help her find a house recently. For one thing, he knew his mother would never let Jocelyn move out. And if she lived alone, she'd be able to see other men behind his back every day.
Calvin reasoned that having her live with him would be the best way to keep her from seeing other men.
"But you said you'd find me a place to live! How could you have forgotten? Does this mean I won't get kicked out of the house?" Jocelyn thought to herself. She beamed with relief, thinking it was worth it to be sick.
Calvin changed the way he treated her simply because she had a fever.
Jocelyn asked again, trying to figure out where she should stay later, "Now that I don't have to move elsewhere, where am I going to sleep? Do you want me to sleep in your room or the guest room?"
