Chapter 1020
Chapter 1020 Artemis Going Mad
His grandchildren were exceptionally intelligent.
From a young age, under his guidance, the two children may not have been ready to lay down their lives for each other, but they were
certainly there to support and look out for each other.
He initially thought the two cousins could maintain a respectful and friendly relationship, living in peace and harmony.
Yet, all because of a woman, they found themselves at odds, face to face, as if they had encountered mortal enemies.
He was still alive then, so he could barely manage to keep them in check.
Once he was gone, he was certain they would turn against each other over a woman.
Artemis looked at the elderly man in front of him, his hair white as snow and his face full of worry, and gently began to smile.
Glen glared at him and asked, “What are you laughing at?”
Artemis nodded and said, “You've lived a long life and personally taught both Edmund and me, Granddad. I never thought that, in the end,
you would be the one who couldn't see it. I know what you're worried about. You're simply afraid that a hundred years from now, Edmund and
I will both be devastated over a woman. Actually, there's no need for you to worry. Edmund is very open-minded. He has let go of the past and
won't interfere anymore.”
Glen snorted coldly, his eyes glaring as he stroked his beard. “Since you already knew he had let go, why did you rush to the Chivers
residence in such a hurry? Do you not trust me and your uncle? Are you worried that we might do something inappropriate for Edmund
because of Bay?”
If Artemis were to say yes, Glen would slap him to death.
Artemis understood Glen all too well, so naturally, he wouldn't foolishly agree.
He simply smiled and said, “I was brought up by you, Granddad. Your character is not for me to question, so don't belittle yourself.”
In response, Glen asked fiercely, “Then why did you rush over here? Don't tell me it's just to see me.”
Artemis chuckled, retorting, “Shouldn't I come to see you?”
Glen scoffed. “As soon as you entered the Chivers residence, you headed straight for the back garden. I bet you knew that Bay and Edmund
were enjoying coffee in the gazebo, and you couldn't resist the urge to stir up trouble.”
Artemis rubbed his brow, his face calm and his heart scoffed as he said, “The kids are clamoring for their mom. I can't soothe them, so I'm in a
hurry to bring her back to calm them down.”
What an excuse! Glen was so amused that he burst into laughter. He picked up a magazine from the table and playfully tossed it at him.
“Get lost. Every time I lay eyes on you, it shaves three years off my life,” Glen said.
Artemis skillfully dodged, smiling lightly as he said, “Granddad, you're getting on in years. Please don't get angry. Too much anger is bad for
your liver and can harm your health. Although your granddaughter-in-law is a skilled doctor, you're the one who suffers in the end if you fall
ill. It's not worth it.”
Glen picked up another magazine and threw it at him. “Get lost. Don't be an eyesore in front of me.”
Inside the gazebo, upon hearing from the housekeeper that Artemis had hurriedly arrived, Edmund initially planned to head to the back
garden. However, after receiving the news that Glen had called Artemis to the study, Edmund simply smiled.
Edmund turned his head to look at Bailey, who was leisurely sipping coffee across from him, and he said, “Bay, I remember you used to hate Belonging to NôvelDrama.Org.
it when people bossed you around.” Doesn't it bother you, annoy you, or frustrate you that he's so domineering, controlling your freedom like
this?”
Sipping lightly on her coffee, Bailey fell silent for a moment before saying, “If it's someone you truly cherish, no amount of fussing would
ever be bothersome.”
Edmund gave a slight nod, a trace of gloom passing through his eyes. Indeed, when it comes to the one you adore, no matter how much you
care for them, it never feels bothersome. Instead, it feels incredibly sweet and blissful.
Bailey felt the pressure settling around her, and she couldn't help but sigh inwardly.
Even though she was mentally prepared, seeing Edmund in that state still made her whole body ache with tension.
She knew his vow of never marrying was not made lightly. The rest of his life could be short, but it could also be long.
After countless years with Artemis, she looked back to find everything changed, the people unrecognizable. Yet, the man who protected her
with a sincere heart might still be waiting in the same place. Such profound affection and deep commitment.
“Edmund, I—”
It seemed he had guessed what she wanted to say, and Edmund quickly interjected, “Bay, if you say sorry, it means you think I've become a
burden to you. If that's the case, it's better for me not to stand up. I'll just keep dragging myself along. The day I wear out my body, it will be a
kind of release.”
Bailey's face changed instantly, a flash of shock and pain crossing her eyes. “Edmund, how could you—”
Before she could finish speaking, Artemis' voice suddenly interrupted. “Edmund, you should really focus on healing your leg. After all, if you
were to become disabled, collapse, or even die, the one left feeling guilty and blaming herself would be Bailey. You keep saying you love her.
Surely you wouldn't want to see her spend the rest of her life in regret, would you?”
Bailey abruptly turned her head, glaring fiercely at Artemis. “Stop talking. Go wait in the main house. I'll come find you after I finish chatting
with Edmund.”
Ignoring her warning, Artemis strode into the gazebo, casting a wicked glance at Edmund. He raised an eyebrow and said, “Just now,
Granddad was worried that we, cousins, might turn against each other. I told him you're broad-minded and advised him not to worry. But the
words Edmund just said were like a harsh slap in my face. Is Bailey really worth you giving up your dignity and life for her?”
After he finished speaking, he reached out, grabbed Bailey's arm, and began to pull her toward the outside.
Bailey struggled fiercely. “Artemis, what the hell are you doing? Let me go.”
Naturally, Artemis wouldn't let go. When he couldn't pull her anymore, he simply scooped her up in his arms. His steps quickened, not
pausing for even a moment.
Edmund's grip on the wheelchair handle tightened and then loosened, then tightened again. His eyes flickered uncertainly, dark and deep as
ink.
It was only when Artemis, carrying Bailey, disappeared at the garden exit that he slowly let go of the slide pole in his hand.
With his head bowed, a bitter smile appeared at the corner of his lips.
Back when Edmund was just an ordinary man, he didn't dare to pursue her, fearing he couldn't provide the happiness she yearned for. Now
that I'm broken and ruined, I no longer have the courage to pursue her. Letting go is the best way to protect her.
After Artemis threw Bailey into the car, she immediately swung a punch at him. Edmund has been so patient. Why is this man still so
domineering? If it weren't for the fact that Artemis was his cousin, Edmund wouldn't have let go so easily. Because they are cousins, bound by
familial ties, Edmund chooses to step back in silence. This man... Oh, this man...
“Artemis, don't you feel any pity or compassion for him?” she questioned.
Artemis took her punch squarely, then, disregarding her resistance, he firmly gripped her shoulder, pinning her down in the seat. “Do you
think I should pity him and feel sorry for him? Do you believe it would be the right choice to give you up to him?”
Bailey's resistance faltered for a moment. She bit her lip hard, stubbornly staring at him with a defiant look on her face.
After a good while, she finally managed to squeeze out a few words. “That's not what I meant.”
“Is that not what you meant?” Artemis gave a cold laugh, his hand cupping her chin, his teeth gritted as he said, “You pity him, yet you can't
give him what he wants. Do you really think that's for his own good?”
