Chapter 11 The Regret
Chapter 11 The Regret
“Yes, I want a divorce!” Calvin was utterly calm.
Lewis had just left his mother’s room to look for his wife.
He heard what Calvin said and was petrified.
Carrie’s whole body was shaking and her teeth were chattering.
This loser, douchebag, slum dog.
A man like him dared to ask for a divorce?
Who gave him the confidence to say that? Or worse, was he having an affair?
That must be the case. Why else was he so bold to talk back to her?
Rita was just as shocked. She didn’t like Calvin at all and had gone all the ways to divorce him.
But after two years, she had seen a ton of virtues in him.
He was attentive, tolerant, persistent...
She thought she almost convinced herself to accept him as her husband and be nicer to him.
But now she felt like she was being a dumbass. Turned out Calvin didn’t want to live with her at all.
He didn’t want her anymore. Content © provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
She couldn’t just swallow her pride and acknowledge that. With her beautiful almond eyes filled with
sorrow, she trembled and said, “Say that again!”
Calvin wasn’t feeling good about this and he never wanted to take it this far.
He clutched his fists as if he was encouraging himself.
“Let’s get a divorce.”
Rita roared, “Why!”
“Because we’re done!”
“Because I’ve had enough of this disaster!”
“Because...I’m tired of this.”
Actually, Calvin also wanted to say that it was because she agreed to work for Vincent.
Calvin didn’t care about this but he cared about how she felt about this.
He also believed that the reason why she agreed was because she didn’t want to make a scene out of
this.
But what if one day Carrie made her marry Vincent? Would she choose to obey her?
There were some boundaries that couldn’t be crossed no matter what happened.
Calvin was disappointed. Maybe he shouldn’t compare himself with Carrie.
Because he wasn’t good enough for her.
So, it was better to let go and go their separate ways.
Rita looked at Calvin and all she thought about was his words. They were done...He had had enough of
this disaster...He was tired of her...
What disaster? Why would he say that?
Then Carrie ran downstairs and slapped Calvin in the face.
But this time, Calvin grabbed her hand and stopped her.
“In the past, I’m your son-in-law and you could do whatever you wanted to me.”
“But from now on, you’ll never get your way!”
Carrie struggled and got off of him. She couldn’t deal with the sudden change of Calvin’s attitude.
He should be acting like a coward who would do whatever she wanted him to do.
“A divorce? You’re out of your mind! Who are you to say that? Do you know what you are? Nothing but
a live-in son-in-law.”
“Once you married to the Houston family, you’ll always be a Houston. We were kind enough that we
didn’t change your last name to Houston and you repay us with the proposal of a divorce? You’ll die a
Houston for the rest of your life unless we kick you out of this family.”
Calvin was surprised. He thought she was the one who wanted them to get a divorce.
“You always wanted us to get divorced, right? Now, I’ll make your wish come true.”
Carrie did change her mind not because of Calvin but because of her pride.
The Houston wasn’t prestigious or noble but was kind of well-known.
If these two got divorced, the gossip and rumors would haunt the Houston family endlessly.
And some people might think that there was something so wrong with Rita that even a loser like Calvin
would despise her.
At that time, the reputation of both Rita and the Houston family would be ruined and torn apart.
Carrie put her hands on her hips and scorned, “Oh, so you’re a better man now, aren’t you? And you
don’t need us anymore because you ill mother isn’t sick anymore, right? You ungrateful bastard. Rita,
now you know what a jackass he is. I shouldn’t have forced you to divorce him at the beginning.”
It was as it was. Calvin didn’t want to rake up the past and just wanted this to be over. And then, they
could go their separate ways.
“Do whatever you please. I’ll give back the money spent on my mother’s treatment.”
When it came to money, Carrie was even cockier.
“Give back the money? How are you gonna do that? Do you have any money on you?”
“You really thought that just because you brought the million-dollar Basilisk Venom, we’ll believe it was
yours? You must have stolen it or found it somewhere. You want a divorce? Okay. You complained that
you didn’t get paid for being a servant. But why didn’t you mention that every penny you’ve ever spent
came from our family and we’ve spent so much on your mother’s treatment. Did I ever ask you to give
the money back?”
Carrie was right and that was one of the reasons why Calvin was never confident in front of the
Houstons.
Shirley was constantly in a bad condition and the medical bills had piled up as years went by.
He didn’t have any money so Rita had always covered it for him.
If he really did the math, they had costed her more than ten thousand dollars.
Seeing that Calvin was silent, Carrie got carried away, “I don’t ask for a lot. If you give me fifty thousand
dollars, I’ll agree on the divorce.”
Fifty thousand was too much for Calvin.
“I can repay you in other ways like working in the Houston’s clinic.”
“Phew, it was fifty thousand, not five bucks. Do you even know anything about medicine? What can you
do for the clinic? Do the cleaning? A janitor only makes two hundred dollars a month and it will take you
twenty years to save up five thousand if you don’t spend any money. By the time you get the money,
Rita would be a middle-age woman. And you want to divorce her when she’s not young and pretty
anymore? You’re not only a coward. You’re also a jerk.”
Calvin was speechless. Carrie was really good at calling people names.
“Then what do you want?” Calvin threw the question to Carrie and he made up his mind that he would
do whatever she said.
“Hmm,” Carrie snorted, “If you want an early divorce, I’ll let you. Rita, go to the Rosewood Chelston
Clinic with him for that project.”
Rita was stunned, “Mom, stop it. How can he help out? He didn’t know anything.”
“Just do what I say. What? You didn’t want to divorce him?”
“Mom...” Rita didn’t know what to say and stormed back to her room.
Calvin quietly packed up his stuff. Carrie had locked up his room and left.
Calvin looked up and saw all the lights of the three-floor building were off at once.
The servants didn’t want to lose their jobs because of him.
Calvin took his quilt to the garage and slept on the ground,
The temperature there was pretty low and he was wearing a T-shirt. But he didn’t feel cold at all.
He felt that there was some sort of golden source of energy flowing throughout his body and he felt
pretty warm.
All of a sudden, he heard the sound of high heels coming towards him and he immediately thought of
Rita.
Then a thick quilt was thrown at him. Rita turned around and left.
Calvin didn’t say anything either. He held back his feelings and felt it was time to end this.
But Rita returned to him unexpectedly. She was standing in the shadow.
“Calvin, are you serious about this?”
“Yes.”
“Just because my mother doesn’t treat you right?”
Rita’s tone irritated him and he blurted out, “Isn’t that enough?”
“You...Fine. You want a divorce? I won’t let you get what you want. I want you to know that you’re
nothing without the Houston family.”
After that, Rita kicked on the car door and the Benz started buzzing squeakily in the night.
