Chapter 329
Chapter 329
Chase arched an eyebrow at Ian, a smirk playing on his lips. “Must’ve been someone who blew your injuries out of proportion to trick her into coming back, huh?”
Clara marched briskly to Sasha’s bedside, clutching her hand with reddened eyes as she surveyed the damage. “Sweetie, does it hurt?”
Sasha chuckled, her voice carefree. “Nah, the docs numbed me up good for the surgery. It’s the perfect excuse to kick back and relax. Don’t you worry your head about me.”
Chase leaned against the wall, a teasing laugh escaping him. “Funny, I thought I heard someone howling in pain just a short while ago.”
“Chase, would you just shut it!” Sasha snapped, annoyance lacing her words.
Chase’s reaction was instantaneous. He mimed a “zipping his lips” gesture with his hands.
Ian scowled at him. “Did you take care of what I asked?”
“Checked and done,” Chase replied confidently. “Sasha’s medical record shows a miscarriage due to a severe impact, and we’re sticking to that story publicly. The doc in the know’s been briefed to keep mum. Should be no issues there. But who the hell did this? You didn’t even know about Clara being pregnant, so how did someone else get wind of it?”
Ian’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. “Maybe the target was Clara all along.”
Just then, his phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, he stepped out of the room to answer.
“Ian,” came Edwin’s anxious voice as soon as the call connected. “I heard about Clara’s car crash. How is she?”
Ian clenched his jaw in frustration. “And you thought to ask now? If it hadn’t been for your rush to blow Heidi’s cover, none of this would have happened. Do you have any idea how much harm Clara could’ve been in if she’d been in that car?”
There was a brief silence before Edwin asked, “So it’s not Clara who’s hurt?”
“It’s her friend,” Ian replied coldly. “Brakes tampered with by some goon from the car dealership. We caught the guy, but he won’t spill who sent him. Besides Heidi, I can’t think of a second suspect.” RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
When he heared this, Edwin’s gaze turned icy. “I’ll look into it. You take care of Clara. If it’s Heidi, she won’t get off easy.”
After hanging up, Edwin drove back to his estate. Since returning from Riddleton, he had confined Heidi to the house. If she had targeted Clara, it would have been over the phone.
Stepping inside, he was met by the servant reporting that Heidi had been in high spirits all day, singing and dancing in her room.
Edwin’s lips twisted into a cold smirk. He didn’t need to guess why. Heidi thought Clara was the one who got hurt. She was celebrating her successful scheme.
He strode upstairs and pushed open Heidi’s door.
“Edwin, you’re back?” Heidi stopped dancing and ran towards him with a smile.
Edwin handed her a piece of cake without a change in expression. “You’ve been good lately. Here’s a treat.”
Heidi was visibly touched, feeling favored. “I’ll always listen to you from now on, okay? Please don’t ignore me.”
Edwin ruffled her hair affectionately. “Enjoy the cake. I’ve got a conference call in the study.”
Leaving the room, he returned moments later to find Heidi asleep on the bed. He retrieved her phone and retreated to his study.
As he activated the listening device on the phone, his eyes hardened with resolve.
