Uncertain Feelings
“David, please leave us!” said Darian as they stood in front of the company’s lobby after finishing a meeting with foreign investors from Singapore.
David, who was in the driver’s seat, lowered his head and quickly stepped out of the car. He could feel the tense atmosphere during the journey back to the office. It was all his fault for entering Darian’s office at the wrong time, just when Darian and Fahira were having a serious conversation. Fahira knew the reason behind Darian’s drastic mood change. She was certain that he was upset because she had taken off the diamond ring he had given her earlier. Fahira didn’t want to draw attention by wearing such a precious ring. She wasn’t ready for her coworkers to know about their relationship before they received Darian’s mother’s blessing.
Feeling frustrated with Darian’s unpredictable behavior, Fahira was about to get out of the car with David, but Darian quickly locked the car doors and instructed Fahira to move to the front seat. The luxurious black car slowly left the company premises.
“Where are we going, Sir?” asked Fahira, receiving no response. Darian remained still, gazing straight ahead at the road.
For nearly three hours, he had been suppressing his emotions because Fahira had taken off the ring he believed she had feelings for him too. Fortunately, during the meeting, Darian managed to control his emotions and successfully secured a business contract with the foreign investor. Darian was puzzled by the woman beside him. While many women were lining up and eager to marry him, Fahira was the one who refused without hesitation.
“There’s still a lot of work I need to do today, Sir!” Fahira interjected again, failing to break the icy atmosphere in the confined space. Darian suddenly became mute and deaf. Fahira felt as if she was stranded in the North Pole with its icy king.
“Alright, I apologize!” Fahira said with annoyance, looking at Darian. The car suddenly braked and stopped on the side of the highway.
“Apologize for what?” Darian looked at Fahira with a cynical expression.
“I don’t know! I’m just amazed at how you can be angry one minute and nice like a fickle teenager the next,” Fahira honestly stated, further frustrating Darian.
“What part of what I said this morning wasn’t clear, Fahira? Are you really that stupid or just pretending to be?” Darian snapped while messing up his hair and loosening his tie, feeling choked.
Rather than being afraid, Fahira held back a amused smile at seeing Optimus Prime, who usually only appeared stoic and cold, now acting silly over a ring.
“Okay, fine, I’ll ask again!” Darian sighed deeply and exhaled slowly three times to control the emotions that were about to explode. This time, Fahira couldn’t hold back her laughter. She burst out laughing, covering her mouth with her hand, while Darian could only look at her with irritation. The anger that had been building up gradually subsided just by seeing Fahira’s laughter. Darian never understood why Fahira could effortlessly consume his entire being, even with her laughter that melted his icy heart.
Realizing that Darian was just staring at her blankly, Fahira quickly suppressed the remaining laughter and returned Darian’s unreadable gaze. The sharp, laser-like gaze had now turned into a gentle, loving look.
“Okay, I apologize, Sir, about this!” Fahira took out the diamond ring Darian gave her earlier that morning from her blazer pocket and placed it in Darian’s hand. She then held both of Darian’s hands in hers and looked into his deep, black eyes, trying to fathom his innermost feelings and convincing herself that her love wasn’t unrequited.
“Does that mean you accept my love?” Darian said eagerly. He held Fahira’s hands and locked his intense black gaze with hers, attempting to delve into her deepest feelings and reassure himself that his love wasn’t unreturned.
Fahira shook her head gently and said, “No,” pausing for a moment as she reluctantly broke their eye contact, relishing the change in Darian’s handsome face. “Until Mr. Darian says ‘I love you’ first!” Fahira continued, and a sigh of relief escaped from Darian’s lips instantly.
“Should it be said again? You just did it!” Darian’s hand slipped from Fahira’s grasp as he scratched the back of his head, even though it wasn’t itchy. Fahira’s smile lit up her face as she nodded.
“Okay,” Darian replied briefly, then reached for Fahira’s hands again, holding them tightly as his heart raced. The atmosphere felt tense and thrilling for both of them, and even the sounds of passing cars and honking horns couldn’t disrupt the romance of the two lovebirds lost in their affection.
“Fahira!”
“Hmmmmm!”
Darian’s lips remained firmly sealed. The word “love” still hadn’t escaped his mouth. Only his eyes gazed intently at Fahira.
“Forget it! Let’s go back to the office, Sir; our lunch break is almost over!” Fahira said in frustration, as nearly 30 minutes had passed without the sacred word leaving Darian’s lips. She forcefully released her grip from Darian’s hand and turned to face the road again.
“Fahira, I love you!” Darian quickly said.
“What does that mean, Sir? I don’t understand!” Fahira playfully teased Darian, pretending not to know. It seemed that teasing Darian only required such a lighthearted approach.
“What now!” Darian muttered softly with a strange expression. There was no way both of them didn’t understand the meaning of those three words.
“Forget it! Let’s turn on the car and go back to the office!” Fahira invited, enjoying Darian’s puzzled expression. It was a good opportunity for Fahira to playfully tease Darian in return for his cold behavior all this time.
“I… I love you!” Darian said, which immediately made Fahira turn her gaze towards him.
“What, Sir?” Fahira teased again.
“This woman is something else. Beautiful but feisty!” Darian grumbled inwardly, then started the car’s engine.
“On Saturday afternoon, I’ll pick you up at your house; we’ll go meet Mama!” Darian continued without much enthusiasm to repeat his words, while Fahira could only smile victoriously. Finally, Optimus Prime had declared his love for her.
“Bring this with you because it’s yours!” Darian reached for Fahira’s hand and placed the ring back into her grasp. Fahira looked at Darian and smiled.
“Let’s start everything from scratch, so whatever happened in the past, I hope it won’t affect us!” Darian reached for Fahira’s hand, which still held the ring, and kissed it.
That evening, Darian reluctantly allowed Fahira to leave with Gavin. Fahira promised to explain her relationship with Darian to Gavin. In Fahira’s eyes, Gavin was a good man, and she didn’t want to hurt the doctor who had saved her brother’s life.
“Fahira!” Gavin stopped her as Fahira was about to get out of his car.
“Yes, Gavin? What is it?” Fahira said, holding the car door before sitting back down. Gavin looked at Fahira with an indescribable expression.
“I want to talk seriously for a moment!” Gavin said, releasing his seat belt and looking at Fahira.
“I like you!” That short sentence seemed to momentarily stop Fahira’s heartbeats before they resumed loudly. Fahira froze; she had just planned to tell Gavin about her relationship with Darian, but now he was confessing his feelings to her.
“You must be mistaken!” Fahira forced the words out with difficulty. Her tongue felt dry, making it hard to reject him. How could she break the heart of a man who had been so good to her and Ariel?
“No, I’ve liked you for a long time. I’ve even told my mother about you; she wants to meet you!” Gavin honestly admitted, causing Fahira’s face to turn pale. She had to shatter the hopes of the man in front of her before anything even began.
If only Gavin had confessed his feelings before Fahira got involved with Darian, perhaps she would have fallen for him, as it wasn’t difficult for a charming and charismatic doctor like Gavin to win a woman’s heart, especially Fahira, who had never experienced true love.
Gavin reached for both of Fahira’s hands, gazing intently into her deep, dark eyes. He saw his own reflection in those beautiful orbs.
“Take your time to think, and I’ll wait as long as you need!” Gavin continued when he noticed her hesitation.
“Gavin, I’m sorry, but I can’t!” Those words came out trembling.
“It’s because of Darian, right?” Gavin replied, forcing a smile. Fahira remained silent, repeatedly swallowing her saliva with difficulty. Her heart had just been filled with the sweetness of Darian’s affection, and on the same day, she had to shatter another man’s heart.
“Mr. Darian proposed to me!” Fahira said with difficulty.
“I’m grateful, finally Mr. Darian found his chosen one. You’re lucky, Fahira,” Gavin said sincerely, trying to calm his agitated heart.
Gavin tried to maintain a calm expression on his face. After all, he had to be happy for his cousin.
“Congratulations to you both, and don’t forget to invite me to your engagement, okay?” Gavin said, still keeping a genuine smile.
“Thank you, Gavin, for understanding. We can still be friends!” Fahira offered, still gazing intently at the man in front of her. She knew Gavin was disappointed, but he was skilled at hiding it.
“Of course. I’ll be there for you, Fahira!” Gavin reconnected his seat belt as Fahira got out of his car. With a smile still on his face, Gavin waved goodbye to Fahira, who was standing by the side of his car. As the car window closed, Gavin’s smile faded away. His heart hardened as he struggled to hold back his disappointment.
“I love you, Fahira. I truly love you!”Content held by NôvelDrama.Org.
