Denied by Destiny: Trapped in the Shadows of the Mate Bond

Chapter 86

Kaia POV

After dinner, Father pulled Samson into his office for a private conversation. Something apparently, that was just for them to discuss together.

I wanted to check the guard's night time shift switch over anyway, which was where I was now. Things were quiet tonight at the border, but we can't get complacent...the attacks can happen at any time and are arranged to try and catch us off guard. So far they've not been able to breach the borders.

I was on one of the hills that looks down to the pack grounds, more inland than by the coastal cliff tops. I could see everything, even Samson leave the alpha house and start walking towards me in the distance.

"There you are." He climbs the last part of the hill, before stopping and catching his breath. The gradient was steep, it took a few attempts before no longer feg the climb on your chest.

"I wanted to check the borders, look...look at this view."

"It's certainly one to compete with Clear Waters." Samson takes in the view, the moon now shining brightly upon the ocean waters in the far distance. The pack grounds were well lit even for werewolves. I'm assuming Father wanted the additional security of light within the inner pack grounds to help

The borders have continued to hold, there is no other choice...they must hold. But with constant threat at your door, the pack members to become wary at night time.

"I'm glad you got out in time." He says, and I nod in agreement as we continue to enjoy the view. In my peripheral vision I sense Samson now looking at me. This must be a bittersweet moment to be reunited with his Alpha.

Samson's Father was the beta in our old pack and didn't survive the attack. Samson is 2 years older than me and at 18, left to start his beta training.

He wasn't there for the attack. My heart breaks for him knowing he was so many miles away and learned of the fate of his pack through hearsay.

"It must have been awful for you to be so far away." I let out a sigh, my eyes now looking into his.

"It was! Alpha Beckett says he is looking for a beta, that I could perhaps trial out for it. He says the beta blood within me is strong."

"You should..." I smile at him, he would make an excellent beta.

"You should, I mean only if you plan to stay. Where have you been?"

"After the attack, I ended up in a small pack. Not a lot to them but they offered me shelter and in return I would train their warriors. I had a few months of beta training under my belt..." "You didn't finish training?" I gasp.

"No pack...no beta."

I hadn't even thought about it. Without a pack Samson wouldn't have been able to complete training, he would have been made a rogue by default.

"What about you. You hadn't told your Father about being at the Dark Phantom pack..about leaving the Amber Desert pack."

"Father doesn't know a lot of things... things I don't really want to tell him."

"Oh? Like what?" Perhaps I would tell Samson and Father in time but I was thriving in my new life, I didn't want to drag my old life into it...not yet. "Another time maybe...that's in my past now. I'm all about the future nowadays."

A soft smile enters onto my face as I start to head back down the hill top, the guard shift switch had taken place and I could now retire for the night.

"You look good, beautiful in fact."

"It's the sea air, it's being by water again. There's something majestic about it." I could feel even for myself how refreshed I had been lately. The hill down is steep and I've done it plenty of times but Samson still insists on walking next to me, his hand held out slightly in case I needed aid.

Once a beta, always a beta.

Samson was a close friend of mine in my childhood, he would be in the Alpha house during pack meetings, as of course was I.

Father was protective, I didn't really have a big groups of friends...I think he worried I would be influenced but Samson was always ready to play, ready to teach me horse riding. He was even with me for my first shift. We kept it a secret, in our pack it was taboo to shift without family members when underage.

We walk back to the alpha house, me giving Samson a small tour of the inner pack grounds. Either myself or Father will need to walk him through the pack borders tomorrow and he'll be up early to run training tomorrow morning

"I know this is forward as I've only been here for a few hours, but...if I was ever to want to spend time with you...."

"I'm always here if you need support Samson, although I've only been here for a month. I'm learning as I go."

"I meant...like a date. Maybe tomorrow."

"A date...with me?" I was taken aback by this and wasn't entirely sure of how to respond.

"Unless....you don't want to. I'm sorry, that was stupid. I should have asked if you have a mate...you found

your mate?"

"I just wasn't expecting it. I have a senior pack meeting tomorrow evening but after that...maybe we could do something."

"Okay, it's a date then." He smiles as he opens the front door for me to enter first.

"Okay...." A small level of excitement bubbles within me, but my wolf isn't feg as enthusiastic about the prospect of a date with another man.
