Denied by Destiny: Trapped in the Shadows of the Mate Bond

Chapter 84

Kaia POV

If I extend my hearing far enough, I can hear the voices of the humans on the white yacht in the near distance. Their laughter now travelling on the ocean breeze.

They were anchored, dressing to snorkel in the crystal blue waters that I now call my home.

This was my favourite spot, the cliff tops. It reminded me of the Clear Waters pack, of the pack I grew up

1. in.

I never knew my mother, she died when I was born. But growing up at her pack, I always felt close to her.

Until the attack and Father sent me away.

I was alone then, trying to stay hidden enough until I found Father again. That's when Than found me, I thought my life was turning for the better after finding my mate...oh how wrong was I. If anything I had traded a lone life of safety, for a dangerous life of living in a pack again. Not all packs are like my

Mother's

...I can see that now.

I was in the best spot in the pack, best view in the entire country, I think.

The vastness of the ocean offered the extra level of protection the lands needed.

It was contested land. Also within a human tourist hot spot. It hadn't been easy protecting the borders but since day one of arriving here, I have been attending warrior meetings, strengthening local alliances and monitoring training of new trainees. I hadn't stopped.

Which is how I wanted it, I didn't want to think...I just wanted to keep moving.

I was on my usual daily walk, pausing to take in the views as I do every day. If I wasn't in the Alpha's office working, I was walking around the pack grounds This felt like my new home and I think I'll be happy here.

I watch the snorkelling humans, the coastal wind whipping through my hair when I feel a presence behind me. I turn to find the Alpha of the Nightshade Reformed pack standing alone.

"You shouldn't be out here alone Kaia." His lips tug up into a small smile, a weighted sigh emitting from his lungs...he didn't like me being unguarded.

"I'm fine, I've looked out for myself for the past 4 years as it is." My eyebrows furrow as he takes a step towards me, the scar across his face showed no sign of causing him pain but to think what he must have gone through with the pack attack, what he must have endured.

And he did it alone, without me.

The limp in his leg causes him pain daily, I can see the suffering behind that brave face he puts on for the pack members daily. But he can't hide it from me.

*The borders aren't safe and this is still a reformed pack." Since buying the lands, Father opened up the pack to rogues, as well as shifters that wanted to join a new pack for better opportunities. The majority of members meant no harm, but sometimes it was hard for rogues to leave their pasts behind him.

"Look at them, I don't think they are a threat to me right now." I chuckle pointing at the humans in their bikinis and swim shorts, now splashing around enjoying themselves.

"I thought that before Kaia, and then we were attacked."

A sadness washes over me, the past must haunt him daily.

"I could have stayed, I could have helped...fought even

"You were 16 Kaia, I couldn't lose you. I couldn't put your life at risk like that. I would never put you in the position where you had to chose between yourself and others. The Clear Waters pack is dead to us now, we can only remember it and try to recreate it with the Nightshade Reformed pack. "They are just used to being self serving, not thinking of others. They will get there Father, you just need to stay patient. Show them the strength of being part of a pack.*

"With you by my side Kala, I can do anything" He smiles at me, before gesturing his elbow for me to take.

As I walk towards him, his eyes glaze over into a mind-link. I was so proud of him, he had become an alpha again.

When I arrived to the pack he couldn't believe it. I walked along the long straight path having been granted access at the gate using our code word. When he sent me away, just before the borders were attacked, he gave me a code word for us to use if he survived and I ever went looking for him.

I think he thought it was a joke at first. But when he came running out of the Alpha house, moving as quickly as his leg would allow to find me...I collapsed to my knees in tears.

No matter what had happened before that moment I could finally let go, finally grieve.

Because my life would start again, a rewrite. I had my beloved Father back. I didn't need a mate bond, I only needed him

My arm laces within his as we start to slowly walk back to the alpha house. Once his mind-link finishes he looks to me with a smug smile.

"Come, I have a surprise for you."*
