Chapter 4 Face
"Mr. Herbart, Mrs. Herbart's face..."
Blanche's heart skipped a beat because she thought her lie would be exposed. She hurriedly lowered her head, picked up the mask, put it on, and grabbed the servant's hand.
"Don't blame her. I scared her when taking off the mask."
"No, you did not scare me. It's..."
Before finishing speaking, the servant felt a sharp pain in her hand. It was because Blanche had pinched her hard out of desperation.
"Mrs. Herbart..."
The servant blankly stared at her, wondering why she didn't let her tell the truth.
Blanche patted her on the back and comforted her, saying, "Don't be afraid. I'll wear a mask all the time. Don't worry. I won't scare you again."
The servant kept her mouth open because she couldn't close it. She did not understand why Mrs. Herbart was telling such a lie.
Seeing the weird scene, Louis pondered for a moment and frowned, "Since you know how ugly you are, you should cover your face well! Don't show it to people to disgrace me."
Although he maintained a calm face, he felt chills down his spine. Since Blanche's face had made the servants scream in fright, she must be extremely ugly!
Blanche breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, he believed it.
Louis soon turned around and went downstairs. He didn't even want to go into the bedroom after such an incident.
"Mrs. Herbart, your face has no scars at all. Why are you wearing a mask?"
Blanche sized the servant up. The girl had an immature face and seemed in her early twenties. Her eyes looked clear, so Blanche did not think she would stir up trouble.
"What's your name?"
"My name is Clara."
"Clara, please don't tell anyone about it. I have my reasons for doing this. If you keep the secret, I will return your favor."
"Well, OK," Clara nodded with difficulty.
After Clara went out with the tableware, Blanche picked up her phone and found her best friend Erin had sent her a text message.
"Blanche, are you still alive? Has the Herbart family torn you apart?"
Blanche quickly replied, "You wicked girl, are you expecting something bad to happen to me? I'm fine! By the way, how are the sales of D&S's new jewelry?"
Erin instantly responded, "I am caring about you! D&S's new products are selling well. Blanche, you are amazing! Every piece of jewelry you design is popular. You are a genius."
Blanche twirled the small ruby ring on her middle finger and smiled brightly.
"You finally realized it. Treat me better in the future! If you follow me, I will help you make a fortune."
"Tch, don't be smug. By the way, do you plan to wear a mask all the time in the Herbart family? You are a beautiful woman, but you wear a mask to make people believe you're ugly. What a pity!" Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
Blanche replied, "Yes, I will always wear a mask. I was forced to marry Louis. He thinks I am extremely ugly, so he will be in a hurry to divorce me. I will regain my freedom soon. But before that, I must find Henry and persuade him into performing the surgery on my grandma."
Blanche had married into the Herbart family because Dany and Nicole had threatened her with Angela's surgery. Her grandma Angela had a tumor in her brain and needed a very complicated surgery to remove it.
Only two doctors could do the operation. One was Nicole's uncle James, and the other was Louis's cousin Henry.
Henry was very mysterious. Although he was famous, few people had seen him. Before she found him, only James could keep Angela alive. It was because of Angela's operation that Nicole managed to pin down Blanche.
If she had refused to marry Louis in place of Nicole, James would have refused to operate on Angela.
Louis was rumored to be a worthless cripple. Nicole was proud and arrogant, so she was unwilling to marry such a man.
The dowry from the Herbart family was a piece of land, so Dany had been tempted. Her daughter had refused to marry Louis, but she wanted to get the valuable dowry. Therefore, they had come up with the idea of letting Blanche marry him.
After chatting with Erin, Blanche felt a little thirsty.
She picked up the teapot in the bedroom but found it empty. So, she could only go downstairs to drink water.
After reaching the living room, she stopped a servant. The place was so big that she could not see where the kitchen was.
"Where is the kitchen? I'm thirsty."
The servant intently stared at her face as if she could see the ugly scar through the mask. Seeing Blanche frown, she suddenly realized she was too impolite. So, she hurriedly said, "Mrs. Herbart, please follow me".
Following the servant to the kitchen, Blanche looked back. The servant had glanced at the door next to her with a strange look just now. There might be something fishy inside.
After entering the kitchen, Blanche ordered, "Please add some water to the teapot in the bedroom."
After sending the servant away, Blanche took a sip of water, left the kitchen, and stared at the room the servant had glanced at just now. The door was ajar.
Suddenly, there was a delicate voice from inside.
