Chapter 1193
The seasons changed, and another year passed in the blink of an eye.
After a day's work, Willy's gaze was lost on the calendar, "Happy birthday!"
It was exactly that day when she disappeared from his life a year ago! If their child were alive, they'd be almost one year old now, wouldn't they?
Their little one...
Laurie, where in the world are you?
Shutting his eyes in pain, he placed his hand over his heart. He wasn't sure when, but a hole seemed to have formed there, and he couldn't fill it up no matter how.
The empty office was so quiet that a low pressure seemed to be sweeping through, suffocating.
He got up, picked up the car key on the table, and strode toward the door.
He got a small gardenia pot from a greenhouse and made his way to Roman Western Restaurant, where he would go on every occasion. It was the last place they rendezvoused. She said she wanted to spend her birthday with him; he never forgot.
In the same private room, Willy put down the pot and ordered a few dishes and a delicate small two-tiered cake.
He unwrapped the flower pot after signaling the server to leave him be. The white petals gave off a faint fragrance that reminded him of his Laurie. Every time he smelled the scent, it felt as though she was still by his side, and only did his heartache alleviate.
Willy poured some red wine and lit two candles.
"Happy birthday! In the future, I'll spend every year this day with you! Didn't you say you wanted to spend your birthday with me, Laurie? Why haven't you come back?"
His voice turned husky after downing the entire glass. "Where in the world are you? Laurie..."
Why were there no records of her entering and exiting any stations and airports? Neither could he find any signs of her in any of the colleges. He had searched every place that she would possibly be at, but why couldn't he find any clues that would lead to her?
Why did it seem as though she had suddenly disappeared from Earth?
As various maddening thoughts flashed across his mind, he blew out the candle but knitted his brows tightly together, downing a glass of red wine after another.noveldrama
He sat blankly in the private room until ten before he belched and took out a pair of pearl earrings from his pocket, which laid inside a red box, atop a black velvet cloth. The diamonds on the studs formed two adorable dogs, one bigger than the other; though a little different, it wasn't obvious, and a pearl hung below each earring. Willy's lips curved into a bitter smile as he stroked it.
"You loved dogs so much... Do you not miss me and your Tutu and Poey?"
"Happy birthday! By the time you come back, little Poey would've become big Poey!"
His heart panged as he muttered. "Come back? Will you still come back?" he wondered.
Why was he so uncertain at the moment?
"Laurie! You loathe me, don't you? Then why won't you come and find me? You'd even return to check on Zedd, so why won't you check on me when I've been waiting all this while? Why..."
Willy felt as though his breathing was coming to a halt as he clenched his fists tightly.
Just then, his phone rang. Seeing it was from Carson, he stashed his thoughts aside and walked to the window.
"Carson, what's up?"
He loosened his necktie and nodded when Carson said the few of them gathered together and asked if he had the time to join them for a drink. "Okay, I'll be right there!"
After hanging up the phone and returning to his seat, Willy put away the gift and plant. Just as he picked up the car keys, he sat back down and ate a slice of cake from each tier.
He wasn't a fan of desserts, especially cake with buttercream, but no matter he liked it or not, or how sickly sweet it was to him, he had to have a slice that day!
"Laurie, sweetheart, happy birthday!"
"Pray the Lord would be kind to you and our little one! I really hope I can see you again! Laurie, I've been looking for you, waiting, you know? If you can hear me, please come back!" he prayed.
Closing his eyes, he adjusted his mood and made his way to the door, carrying the pot of gardenia.
Meanwhile, a small family party was
n
going on in a private mansion of the Luther family. Balloons filled the massive living room, and the hearty dinner and a Barbie cake were placed on the dining table while gift boxes piled up on the floor. The adults were having dinner while occasionally teasing the little girl chewing her baby hand.
Those present were Elijah, the current head of the
Luther family, and his mother, Preslie, the semiretired second head of the Luther family. After taking some photos, Lauren wiped her baby's hand and handed her to the servants behind her before cutting the cake and handing two slices to them.
"Time sure flies; Yvette's already one. I'm thrilled you two can come, Aunt Preslie, Elijah. You have to eat the cake!"
A motherly tenderness appeared on Preslie's badass face as she put the baby girl on her lap.
"Yeah, this little one is looking more
and more pretty! Laurie, I've never asked you about then, and of course, we can't shove the baby back inside you, but we Luthers are no pushovers! It's just you, me, and Elijah here today. Tell me, who's the father? How did it happen? Your dad's a birdbrain, but I'm not. Whatever it is, you can say it out loud. Don't worry; I'll call the shots for you! I can't let my gorgeous niece be bullied for nothing!"
The family even ridiculed her poor niece for it; she wouldn't just sit idly by! If the beautiful little one weren't around, she'd chop him up the moment she found that son of a b*tch!
Lauren paused her actions and drooped her eyes to cover the hint of sadness underneath, but she pulled a smile when she looked up.
"I've only had a failed relationship, Aunt Preslie. You don't have to call any shots. I wasn't bullied. Yvette is mine!"
Seek him out or take revenge; it should be her call!
"Laurie, since you've decided to change your last name back to Luther, why still so stubborn?" Elijah's brows locked into a furrow when he remembered how he saw her lying lifelessly in a pool of blood with her pregnant belly.
Why wouldn't she say a thing about it and even ban him from investigating?
