Chapter 30
#30 “Are You in A Relationship?”
The soft morning light filters into the room, gently coaxing Sophia awake in Alexander’s apartment. The previous night’s events still echo in her thoughts as she opens her eyes, taking in her surroundings within the guest room’s comforting embrace.
As the remnants of sleep recede, Sophia’s senses come alive to the peculiar quietness of the apartment. She wonders where Alexander might be. With a quiet and curious determination, she softly opens the bedroom door and peers into the hallway, calling his name with a gentle tone.
“Alexander?” she murmurs, her voice echoing in the space. The scent of sizzling bacon suddenly wafts towards her, pulling her in a specific direction. She follows the mouthwatering aroma, allowing it to guide her toward the source.
The kitchen greets her with the promise of a delicious morning meal. A meticulously arranged breakfast is laid out on the granite countertop- scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and fresh fruit presented on a plate. Adjacent to the plate lies a note capturing her attention. She reaches for it, her fingers lightly brushing the paper as she reads the message:
Enjoy breakfast, and take your time. I had to leave early for work-Alexander.
A smile tugs at the corner of her lips as she absorbs his considerate gesture. With the sun casting its warmth and light throughout the apartment, she is drawn to the allure of a leisurely morning on the terrace.
Sophia prepares a cup of coffee, the aroma mingling with the scent of her breakfast, and carries both to the inviting outdoor space. As she settles onto a comfortable chair, the sun’s embrace envelops her, creating a sense of serenity that contrasts with the stormy night she had experienced.
Savoring each bite of her breakfast and each sip of her coffee, Sophia allows herself to be present at the moment. The bustling city around her pauses, granting her a brief respite from the demands of her life. She contemplates the events that led her to this morning -meeting Alexander, sharing an unexpected journey, and finding solace. in his apartment.
After finishing her meal, Sophia readies herself to face the day ahead. Once Sophia arrives at her office, Benjamin is already waiting in her office for her.
“Fun night?” he questions as Sophia sits at her desk and opens her laptop.
“Fun is not the word I would use to describe it,” Sophia replies. “So, Alexander Stone took you home,” Benjamin says with a raised eyebrow, that was surprising.”
Not interested in rehashing the night events, Sophia replies, “As I told you last night, it was the safest and most convenient option. Nothing else.”
“Sure,” Benjamin replies with a laugh.
“Is that why you are here?” Sophia asks, “Because if it is, I am swamped, and you can see yourself out.”
“Well, your escapades with Mr. Stone is not why I am here,” Benjamin retorts. There is actually something that you need to know.”
Sophia looks up from her computer, OK, sounds serious. Go ahead.”
“I found out this morning that someone is digging around about you,” Benjamin informs Sophia. With a slight laugh, Sophia responds, ” Is that all?”
“Aren’t you worried that people might found out about who you are?” Benjamin quickly questions.
Sophia dismisses Benjamin’s cautionary words with a nonchalant wave of her hand. She has never been one to fret over her multiple identities being discovered by others. The complexity of her life, woven with threads of music and law, has shaped her into a person who embraces the enigmatic.
“I appreciate your concern, Ben,” she says, flashing a reassuring smile, “but honestly, I don’t think anyone cares enough to dig into my personal affairs. My music and my work as a lawyer are two separate worlds.”
Benjamin’s expression remains skeptical. He leans forward, his concern evident in his eyes. “You should be careful, Sophia. Some are skilled at unraveling secrets, especially in our line of work.”
“I hear you,” Sophia acknowledges, her voice softening. She values Benjamin’s friendship and his protective nature, even if she doesn’t always share his level of caution. Changing the subject, she asks, “And what about this Michael character? Why the strong warning?”
Benjamin’s demeanor shifts to one of seriousness. “Michael is a different breed, Sophia. He’s not just ruthless in business; he’s relentless in his pursuit of power. He’s known for using any means necessary to get what he wants.
Sophia raises an eyebrow, intrigued by Benjamin’s description. “Give me an example.”
Benjamin leans in, his voice dropping to a confidential tone. “He once sent some of his relatives to prison to gain control of a family-owned company. He plays the game at a whole different level.”
Sophia’s eyes widen in surprise, absorbing the gravity of Benjamin’s words. She hadn’t anticipated such a dark aspect to Michael’s character.” That’s… intense.” This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
“Exactly,” Benjamin replies, his expression grave. “So, I’m just advising you to keep your distance from him. People like Michael don’t hesitate to use others for their own gain.”
Sophia lets Benjamin’s words sink in, her thoughts churning. She appreciates his concern, and part of her acknowledges the wisdom in his advice. However, she also recognizes her instincts, guiding her through countless challenges.
“Thank you for looking out for me, Ben, ‘she finally says, reaching out to briefly squeeze his hand. “I’ll keep what you’ve said in mind.”
As they part ways, Sophia’s mind is a swirl of thoughts-about her intricate life, the enigmatic Michael, and the delicate balance between trust and caution. The city’s rhythm envelops her as she continues on her path, ready to face whatever twists and turns await her on the road ahead
As the days unfold, life continues to weave its intricate patterns for Sophia. She finds herself facing another unexpected encounter-this time with Michael. His charm lingers in the air as he extends an invitation for lunch. Sophia’s smile is polite but firm as she declines, citing her busy schedule.
Undeterred, Michael’s persistence remains evident as he suggests dinner instead. Sophia maintains her resolve, her voice unwavering, “Michael, I appreciate the offers, but I think we should have a straightforward conversation.”
Michael’s expression shifts slightly, curiosity mingling with intrigue. “Fair enough,” he concedes, leaning casually against a railing.
Their conversation is honest yet tinged with an undeniable undercurrent of tension. They both find each other intriguing, but genuine affection is absent. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the city in shades of dusk, Michael’s question hangs in the air.
“Are you in a relationship, Sophia?”
Her response is as blunt as it is honest. “No, I’m not.”
With that confirmation, Michael’s next inquiry lands like a stone cast into still waters. “And how do you feel about Alexander?”
Sophia’s guard subtly tightens, her gaze steady. She senses a hidden motive behind his question, a current she’s wary of entering. She’s been informed of the potential grudge between Michael and Alexander, a piece of information that casts doubt on his intentions.
“Michael, let’s be clear. I’m not interested if you’re trying to involve me in any personal issues between you and Alexander. I won’t be used as a pawn in your games.”
Michael’s mask falters momentarily, his eyes narrowing. But he quickly regains his composure, his features smoothing into an unreadable facade.” Fair enough,” he echoes her words, his tone neutral.
Sophia’s stance remains resolute, her voice firm. “I’d appreciate it if we could keep our interactions professional and straightforward.”
Her words hang in the air, a clear boundary drawn. Despite the intrigue that might linger, Sophia’s priority is protecting herself from undue complications. With a nod, she leaves Michael behind, the city’s pulse surrounding her once again as she moves.
