The Devil Wore A Brown Suit

Chapter 15: Part One Pedition

Chapter 15: Part One Pedition

Day Seven

235 A.M.

I just want to sleep. I hear the wind, I smell the trees, and I am overthinking everything right now. The

smells of magnolias are in the air. I think of my mother.

There are so many thoughts in my head. I remember KoKo bringing me to this cabin as a child. The

cabin that is in between all the worlds feels safe. It was a place for me and my brother to just be

children, a place where we could build a fire and play in the grass. I can’t believe I had forgotten this

place.

Life is so strange. Here I am back in this cabin hiding from the world. KoKo is weak. I do not know how

long he can live on the topside. His time is limited. Sarge lies with him. Aren’t we a nice trio? The three

of us a dog, an injured demon, and a celestial that has no idea how to even begin.

I know I have to save Camilla Dawn and from there she can help me get my children. We can go home.

Do I go back to the underworld? I have no idea where to go. Topside felt like home for a brief moment

and now it feels like a betrayal. Maybe we could stay here in the cabin.

“Sleep my child,” KoKo says so gently. Sarge whimpers. I have been outvoted. I will rest my eyes.

“My child, do not believe the lies.” I hear a voice. It’s the voice. The voice I have been hearing for days.

What lies? I do not believe anything at this point. It is all lies, isn’t it?

I feel like my entire life has been one lie after another. I spent my life trying to be a good girl. Now here

I am with memories that are haunting me. The fire is still burning. I reach my hand out. The warmth of

the fire reminds me of home. There is a sound, a rustling in the distance.

I check on KoKo and Sarge. They are both fine. If it was anything Sarge would wake up and warn me.

There is something red burning in the distance. I look out the window it is hard to make out. The longer

I stare at it the clearer it becomes. It is the tree of good and evil. That means the garden is close to us.

“KoKo, Did you know the tree is here?” I ask quietly. I wasn’t expecting a response.

“Yes.” He replied.

“Are we going to get Camilla first or my children?” I ask.

He takes a deep breath. “No worries child. Everything will work out I promise. Camilla is safe.”

I am more confused than ever. “You need to rest child. Sarge make sure she sleeps the rest of the

night.” KoKo orders.

Sarge comes to the window and nudges me to the fire. I have been outvoted again.

606 A.M.

There is a pounding on the door. KoKo raises his head. Sarge starts to growl. I hear the voice again but

I choose to ignore it. I do not have time for phantom voices right now. The window by the door is

beaming with light. The pounding continues.

“Only a celestial could get here or a descendant,” KoKo whispers to me.

Sarge sits down in front of me. “I know boy. We have to see who it is. It could be about Camilla.”

I pat his head and get up. As I walk to the door I am terrified.

“Do not be scared child,” KoKo says to me. “I will not let anyone harm you. I have a little fire left in this

old body.”

I believe him. I have a demon and an underworld dog there is no reason for me to be frightened. The

voice is trying to talk to me. I ignore it as I turn the knob on the door.

It is a man. I do not know him. He looks familiar but I do not think we have met before.

“Who are you and why are you here?” I ask him.

The voice stops. There is silence. I look at KoKo and Sarge, they both know him.

“It is Chaos. Mayhem’s Brother.” KoKo tells me.

“I am Mayhem’s brother. I am here to help you get Camilla and your children back.” He tells me.

“Why? Why would you help me? I should let Sarge kill you and step over your dead body. Are you a liar

like your brothers? Like Ryan?” I ask him.

“My brother was trying to protect you. He did not know how much knowledge you could handle? And

Ryan, We had no way of knowing he would turn on us. I am sorry” he tells me as he walks into the

cabin. “I have a gift for you. I know you drank from the tree. I brought you fruit from the tree. It will give

you all of your celestial abilities.” He says as he reaches in his pocket and produces an apple.

He hands it to me. “Here I can stay and help or I can leave. It is up to you. We all love Camilla. I want

her back too.” He says.

The voice is ringing in my ear. “Perdition, that’s not who you think it is in your head. You need to either

listen or shut it out. It is your choice.” Chaos says as he gives me that Mayhem look.

What a devious smug jerk. Who the hell does he think he is? He thinks he can just walk in here with an

apple and tell me he is here to help.

“Izzy, Eat the apple. We got demon things to do today and we need all the help we can get.” KoKo says

to me.

Chaos continues to smile. I walk over to him. “I just want you to know that I do not like you at all. If you

step out of line I will release Sarge on you. Got It! Jerk!” I walk away.

Sarge follows me into the kitchen. I guess I am going to eat an apple. I will either die or be strong

enough to end this. I am not sure what to do here. I have had an apple before, but this is the apple. The

apple was created to be forbidden and I am just going to eat it. I close my eyes and think. Sarge

nudges me. Now he is rushing me too.

“You might want to lay down when you eat that Perdition.” Chaos says.

His voice is so annoying to me. I do not like him at all. I take the apple and go back to the fire. I sit

down. I am just going to eat it. I start to take a bite out of it. The voice comes back. I am not going to

listen to it. I am just going to eat this apple and rest.

How can I rest? I know something is coming that I want no part of. I just want to go home. If I don’t help

them will my world end too? How does the future of topside affect the underworld? Can my brother and

my mother end everything? All these are questions for another day. I will figure all this out after I save

Camilla Dawn and my children.

I hear the voice again. Maybe I should listen to it. I have spent the last week on the topside and I have

learned nothing. I feel like I am running in circles. If the people who have lied to me do not want me to

listen to the voice then maybe I should.

I wish I could talk to my father. I miss my idiot brother. I do not even know my children. I have fractured

memories. I thought maybe I was in love with Mayhem. Perhaps in another life.

“We can help” I hear the voice.

Now it’s we. Who is in my head? Maybe the descendants are playing games with me. I am not sure if

they can be trusted either. KoKo is looking at me strangely. I think he knows I am listening to the voice.

He hasn’t said anything about it.

I feel weak. It has to be the apple. I must rest. I have demon things to do today as KoKo would say.

Everyone is so quiet. It is still very early. I should lie down for a while. I lay down in front of the fire.

Sarge joins me. Chaos starts to speak but I hear KoKo hush him. Do not mess with KoKo, you idiot. I

close my eyes and see what my home was once.
