Chapter 376
It all seemed to start because of her.
She was the root cause.
"David, I'm not going to the funeral," she said.
David's eyes widened in shock. "What? You're not coming to my dad's funeral? Eliza, that's not right, is it?"
"Why isn't it?" She hadn't expected such a strong reaction from David, as if he was seeing his own selfishness laid bare. "I've already done more than enough for him while he was alive, things I shouldn't have had to. Don't I have the right to skip the funeral?" Eliza's voice was cool, almost icy.
Beneath that indifferent facade, her tone was anything but gentle.
David probably hadn't expected Eliza to react this way.
He frowned slightly. "Are you mad?"
Eliza didn't reply.
After a moment of silence, just as she was about to say something, David interrupted her again.
"At our engagement party, all our friends and family found out about our relationship. If you don't show up at the funeral, people will start talking. Funerals are already sad enough, and I really don't have the energy to explain to everyone why you weren't there." Eliza frowned at the man standing before her.
What was he implying?
Did he want her to be sensible and play along for the last act?
She wasn't opposed to playing along for this last scene, but after it was over, would anyone appreciate her efforts?
Not a chance.
Even Amaya, who usually adored her, had started to blame her.
What would their friends and relatives say when they found out she didn't want to marry David, causing Carter's heartbreak?
With these thoughts, she became even more determined not to attend the funeral.
"Then you'll have to explain it to our friends and relatives," Eliza took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, trying to release the heaviness in her heart, "Sorry, I'm a bit tired. I'm
leaving now."
"Eliza." David's voice, filled with confusion and astonishment, halted the woman who was about to turn and leave. "Is this because of Casper?" Casper?
What did this have to do with Casper?
"Is that what you think?" She found it somewhat laughable.
"Is it because my dad's passing interrupted your candlelit dinner?" David's lips curled into a sneer, mocking her. "Even after all this,Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
you're still falling into the same trap,
Eliza. You never learn, do you?"
His tone dripped with disappointment.
He was probably insinuating she was foolish.
Eliza caught the subtext in his words, and the only hint of apology she felt vanished suddenly. "They say actions reveal a person's true character. Now I see yours."
"Am I wrong?" David seemed very agitated, gripping Eliza's arm tightly as he continued to vent, "Have you forgotten how Casper treated you back then? Even if you don't like me, you could have chosen any other man. Why get tangled up with him again?
Do you think he's a different person just because he's lost his memory? A person's nature doesn't change. Besides, can he really stay amnesiac forever? What happens when he regains his memory and finds you by his side? How will he treat you?
He will never love you. Haven't you considered what your fate will be?"
Eliza's arm hurt from his grip.
She hated this form of restraint and struggled hard. "Do you even know what you're saying?"
"Eliza, how many more times do you plan to fall for Casper before you give up?" He shook Eliza's slender frame forcefully, his eyes wide and menacing. "In this world, only I truly care for you, not minding that you've had a child, not dwelling on your опого
past. What more do you want?"
